Protected Species Surveys

Protected species are those that are legally protected by UK Wildlife legislation. Every development must ensure that these species (and in many cases their habitats too) are protected from harm. Dependent on the type, character and location of your site, you may need broader impact assessment or specific species surveys to support your planning application. Many species surveys are seasonal and have strict time constraints. Enquiring at the earliest possible stage can avoid delays.

General Surveys or Supervision For Planning

Wild Earth Ecology offer a wide range of professional ecological services to a scope of clients including land/estate owners, farmers, land agents, home owners and small-scale works, developers, conservation groups, commercial site owners and local authorities. Our teams local knowledge and expertise will help guide you through the planning process to deliver pragmatic, transparent and cost-effective solutions, tailored to your project.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)/Extended Phase 1 Survey

The first stage of an ecological survey is to assess a sites potential to support protected species and habitats. This type of survey is often required for standard planning application on sites where areas of habitat are due to be impacted by the development. This survey involves a walkover the site, detailed mapping of the habitats present and a report which makes recommendations for any more specific protected species surveys that may be necessary.

Ecological Impact Assessment

An ecological impact assessment (EIA) identifies, quantifies and assesses the impact of a development. This is usually applicable to larger-scale commercial developments, or those that are expected to have an impact on sensitive areas.

Habitat Enhancement Management Plan

Many local planning authorities in granted planning application now require a habitat management plan in order for the enhanced habitat (as a result of Biodiversity Net Gain) to be maintained and protected for a defined period post-development.  This plan sets out how to create and appropriately maintain a habitat to maximise its benefit to wildlife.

Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)

The ECoW role involves monitoring to ensure that site based construction activities are delivered to a safe standard, comply with planning consent and/or aid the discharge of planning conditions. This often includes the execution of  Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP), Landscape Environment Management Plan (LEMP), heath & safety procedures and provision of toolbox talks and site inductions for the site personnel.

Discharge of Ecological Planning Decisions

A local planning authority will often grant planning permission on the condition that developers will abide by specific ecological or environmental planning conditions as part of a decision notice.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) aims to achieve a minimum improvement to biodiversity on a site following a development. From 2024, BNG will legally apply to most developments and you will be required to submit a BNG assessment report with your planning application to present how you will achieve net gain. This assessment compares baseline conditions to post-development plans using a metric produced by Natural England. We are ready to assist you with your BNG requirements, whatever the scale required from single extension sized developments to large commercial developments.

Conservation

At Wild Earth Ecology, we believe in the value of understanding your site and it's ecology from soil to sky. A comprehensive assessment of ecosystem function is site-specific but often includes soil analysis to assess pollution risks or productivity for planting schemes to comprehensive monitoring using trail cameras and thermal imaging to offer an accurate picture of the species present and how well balanced each trophic level is within the local ecosystem. Perhaps you are keen to restore habitat to encourage a protected or rare species on to your site that features locally? At every scale, from urban-garden to rural estate, landowners are willing to embrace a 're-wilding' approach to restore land, but lack the support or knowledge to know where to begin. Many typical rewilding tools and techniques that we can advise you on include;

  • Conservation grazing and ousing other herbivores
  • Using traditional species / heritage breeds to prepare soil for restoration
  • Restoring connectivity between habitats
  • Coordinating cross-boundary cooperation for landscape scale impacts
  • Developing volunteering working groups
  • Utilising rural payment funding
  • Long-term monitoring
  • Full species assessment - know what's present on your land
  • New habitat creation/Ecological Enhancement/wilding Projects
  • Habitat Management Planning
  • Environmental DNA testing to identify species presence in rivers
  • Woodland Management
  • Regenerative Farming Practices
  • Botanical Survey
  • Trail Camera Surveys
  • Water Quality Assessment (ponds and rivers)
